Hugs

I headcanon that the Warden (Amell/Surana in particular) is very touch-starved, but doesn’t realize it. They are caught off guard by how affectionate Alistair is (even if they’re not romantically involved). He just unapologetically embraces the Warden for comfort whether for himself or them, because that’s what comes naturally to him. It’s how he communicates. The Warden nearly weeps the first few times he does it.

My headcannon is actually the opposite. My Warden (Allana Cousland) came from a happy and affectionate home. She adored her brother and was her mother’s favorite. I headcannon that after you talk about Duncan, or any other time Alistair remembers the other wardens and gets upset, she hugs him and he’s super awkward at first because the chantry beat into him (or tried to at least) a deep fear of touch and intimacy. He overcomes it eventually but she gives him hugs whenever he seems to need them. Even walking across camp just to hug him because he was looking sad. There’s a reason her father left her in charge of the castle. She’s a nurturer and will do what needs to be done to take care of everyone. She hugs Leliana and Zevran after they tell her their sad stories too, and she hugs Oghren once they’re close enough for him to accept it. She’s very affectionate and Alistair’s the touch starved one.

Oof. I love that too! Touch-starved Alistair makes sense in a lot of ways, considering his childhood! I’m glad he has your Warden to give him all that affection! Thank you for sharing with me.

Dragon Age Asks: can I be nosy about 1, 15 & 17 please?

Hi friend! Thanks for the asks!!!

1. Favorite Dragon Age Game?

Dragon Age: Origins, without question. It was my first DA game and I played it when I was 14. There’s something so great about just a rag tag band of kids stopping a civil war and ending a Blight that really gets to me. It’s so dark and real, and I love it a lot.

15. Top 3 Favorite Mage Companions?

(In no particular order)

– Morrigan – she’s painted to be this dark mysterious person, but if you take the time to get to know her, she is so simple and pragmatic. I absolutely love her character growth that she has when she is actually loved.

– Dorian – He is the smartest person in the Inner Circle and Solas will not convince me otherwise. The man has literally helped to discover the secret to time travel magic, come on! Dorian also has such a huge heart and he wants to always do the right thing. He loves his people and wants them to be better, even though they have done little more than cause him pain.

– Solas – he’s such a silver tongued sass master, but he is far less logical than he thinks. Whether you love him or hate him, it’s so interesting to watch as he tries and fails to adjust to the world that he created (essentially). He claims to be so logical and yet he is so very driven by emotion. He’s an asshole, but he’s my asshole and I love him.

17. Top 5 NPCs who are not companions?

– Anora Mac Tir – QUEEN. She is so smart and fierce and knows how to stand up for what she wants and what she believes in.

– Loghain Mac Tir- this one is new. He is SUCH a good sympathetic villain, especially after you read about his beginnings. He’s deep and passionate and absolutely loves his country and his daughter. But boy does he make some big disastrously horrible mistakes.

– Fiona- “Fuck the Divine” Fiona did not only put the King of Ferelden in his place and give birth to my favorite character of all time, but she also is so strong and feisty. She kicks literal ass, and I wish we got to see more of that side of her in game.

– Jowan – He just wanted a wife and a farm, but he got magic instead. Jowan is such a beautiful mess, and I think he would have been such an amazing companion with a really good arc. I’m looking forward to writing him one of these days.

– Dagna- she’s such an adorable nerd and is so completely passionate about her work. Imagine being a dwarf who dares to study magic! The spunk!

So I was thinking for a story I was writing about Inquisition, that for the “Elven expert” my wardens would fill in for it (Dalish sisters, one married Leliana and one Alistair) as a favor to Leliana while waiting on a follow up on a lead for the cure. One is a first and one was a Hunter with Tamlen but always helped out Hahren Paivel with the clan ceremonies and telling of their history. Plus the Hunter got to learn a lot about eluvians… considering. I love Morrigan and so do they but Yikes.

Morrigan is amazing, but she is not without her rough edges. She totally shemsplains a lot, particularly regarding Mythal’s temple. I think many a Lavellan has been like “wtf yikes” no matter how fun it is to hear her and Solas bicker .

I’d love to hear more about your Dalish sisters! They sound super interesting.

Turns out I have more to say than what I said last night about Dorian and fandom’s treatment of him. A lot more to say. And if this angers some otherwise well-meaning people, so be it. You may be great allies in every other respect, so I’m going to ask y’all to remain a good ally by listening and considering this really carefully. This may seem like no big deal to you, but that’s also precisely why I’m speaking out. Fandom has a big problem with making light and if I can reach at least one person, then I count this to the good.

I am sick to my teeth of Dorian being every straight female character’s “best friend.” Every example I’ve seen hasn’t been a friend. He’s been there to comment on and help with relationship advice and clothes. He’s the Inquisition’s “Dear Abby” without a single consideration of his concerns and fears. If you treated a real friend like that, they’d be tired of your shit tout-fucking-suite because you don’t give back. It’s all about you.

But Tea! I can hear: My character is the focus of the game! The focus of my fic! Well darlin’, we’re all the MCs of our own lives but we also ask other people how they’re doing and feeling. “But it’s just a game! Wish fulfillment!” Okay, your wish is to run roughshod over others because you’re grasping for power you don’t have in your own life? How is it other people with the same problem manage to have headcanons about characters or write fic that treats them with respect?

Do I really need to bring up how gay characters are already treated in media? Do I need to pull out some college 101 on queer representation in media? It’s easily found with a search engine, I assure you.

You can also hear it from your bi and gay friends if you have any. Go on: ask them what they have seen and how they feel about it. Prepare for an uneasy laugh and “you sure you got the time?” Because we have lots of thoughts and feelings on this and rarely are they good. We lose our shit at good rep because it’s so rare.

Bi and gay relationships are glossed over, made light of, tortured, killed, turned into a painful plot point, and otherwise abused to the point that seeing a healthy queer relationship in media that isn’t lampooned or erased in some way is a holy fucking grail. Because there are still people who don’t want to look at us like we’re real people. We can’t love or suddenly that “sinful lifestyle” can’t be demonized or fetishized anymore. Don’t put that in media or people might think this is a normal and acceptable thing that actually happens! The horror!

Gay characters used to be coded as villains or comedy relief. No one ever said they were gay, but if they were very effeminate? Never romantic with a woman? (Ooh but hugging their best lady friend was fine, someone will soon throw out a one-liner.) They were gay. Gay gay gay gaaaaaayyy. Watch the original “Lost In Space.” Our man got villain *and* comedy. But don’t you dare show them in a relationship. The censors won’t allow it.

So you tell me: with queer folks watching this bullshit play out in media we all consume, day in and day out, just where do you think we’re suddenly going to have scores of wisdom and patience about your relationships? We’re barely figuring out our own shit. The “disaster gay” is often too fucking real, though passed off as another joke we make about ourselves because otherwise we might cry. Straight folks have had hundreds of years at this, and you still don’t have your shit figured but we can fix it? Listen: Queer Eye is a very recent phenomenon. We make it look like we got it together because we’ve had to pull our own little communities together to do so – no one else had the time to give us.

What makes you think that Dorian, whose own “loving” father had no time for his gayness, who has had to have brief liaisons in Tevinter because his countrymen don’t support being gay, who is *afraid to love* because of all that and is lonely in a foreign country, has words of relationship wisdom for your disaster straight girl OC? He comments, so what. Sera does too. So does Cole (and there’s a related rant as well). You’re Dorian’s only fucking friend – he *tells you this* at the end of the game and that breaks my heart – and friends will comment on shit that make you happy sometimes.

It’s long past time fandom starts treating Dorian like a real friend. Not because a fictional character is gonna get hurt feels, but because other queer fans are watching this shit and getting bitter from the constant hurt and disappointment of being nothing but a badge of faux-ally pride to you.
