Hugs
I headcanon that the Warden (Amell/Surana in particular) is very touch-starved, but doesn’t realize it. They are caught off guard by how affectionate Alistair is (even if they’re not romantically involved). He just unapologetically embraces the Warden for comfort whether for himself or them, because that’s what comes naturally to him. It’s how he communicates. The Warden nearly weeps the first few times he does it.
My headcannon is actually the opposite. My Warden (Allana Cousland) came from a happy and affectionate home. She adored her brother and was her mother’s favorite. I headcannon that after you talk about Duncan, or any other time Alistair remembers the other wardens and gets upset, she hugs him and he’s super awkward at first because the chantry beat into him (or tried to at least) a deep fear of touch and intimacy. He overcomes it eventually but she gives him hugs whenever he seems to need them. Even walking across camp just to hug him because he was looking sad. There’s a reason her father left her in charge of the castle. She’s a nurturer and will do what needs to be done to take care of everyone. She hugs Leliana and Zevran after they tell her their sad stories too, and she hugs Oghren once they’re close enough for him to accept it. She’s very affectionate and Alistair’s the touch starved one.
Oof. I love that too! Touch-starved Alistair makes sense in a lot of ways, considering his childhood! I’m glad he has your Warden to give him all that affection! Thank you for sharing with me.
